Hand Sanitizers: Are they safe?

Have you noticed that in almost every hospital, supermarket, doctor’s office, dentist’s office, airport, and many other public places there is always a bottle of hand sanitizer sitting on a stand or at a desk?   We even have personal sized sanitizers that you can throw in a bag in case of emergencies.    Funny thing is that we don’t even remember ever seeing hand sanitizers growing up  – we used to just wash our hands.   So is this this just a cash grab for the manufacturers?   Do they really work and are they safe.

purellFirst off, washing your hands with soap and water is the most effective way to clean your hands and disinfect them.   Can you imagine getting prepped for surgery and just as you are going under you see the surgeon squirting some sanitizer on their hands.  Of course they wouldn’t do this, because it’s not as effective as washing their hands.   It’s your choice what type of soap you want to use, but it is still better to wash your hands instead of coating them with hand sanitizer.   Also, hand sanitizers are not as effective if you have dirt or grime on your hands anyway.

So whats in these hand sanitizers that may concern people.  Well there is alcohol, parabens, fragrances, colouring agents – just to name a few.

Parabens are synthetic preservatives found in foods, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and personal care products such as deodorants, moisturizers, shampoos and hand sanitizers.  Their function is to allow the product to be shelf stable for months or even years.  That’s all great, but these parabens are also absorbed into our bodies and mimic estrogen which can disrupt our hormone system and endocrine system.   Endocrine disrupters such as parabens can lead to early puberty in adolescent girls and boys, as reported by the New York Times.   So is this what we should be putting on our skin?  I think not.

Triclosan is an anti-microbe agent added to many soaps, hair care products, sanitizers and hand lotions for anti-bacterial purposes.  It can also be found in toys, clothes and furniture to help prevent fungal growth.  It is effective to a certain degree but it can also lead to bacteria building immunity to it and creating a superbug that is immune to anti-biotics.   Triclosan is also a hormone and immune system disrupter.

Lets put it this way,  you will never know what’s in a chemical fragrance because manufactures don’t have to disclose this info – since it’s proprietary property.   You can only imagine what you are putting on your skin when it comes to chemical and natural fragrances.

Colouring Agents

Although some colouring agents are deemed safe by Health Canada their are independent tests that show otherwise according to Dr Oz.   “The researchers and their parents found a significant increase in hyperactivity in the children during the weeks that they consumed the drink with the artificial colors.  This research correlates with an analysis of different studies done at Columbia University and Harvard University. The analysis affirmed that removing foods and products that contain artificial food coloring can help relieve the symptoms of children already diagnosed with ADHD.”

So what can you do if there is no soap and water to wash your hands and you need to sanitize them right away?

ISS Ionic Silver Solution 6PPM

ISS-1527-2Ionic Silver Solution (I.S.S.) is a pure solution of Sub-Atomic Silver Ions making it the most powerful and bio-available form of Silver on the market today! Ionic Silver Solution contains 99.9% silver ions in a soluble state and are 400 times smaller than your red blood cells allowing them to easily pass through cell membranes where viruses reside!

This includes bacteria, fungi, yeasts, viruses and parasites. These micro-organisms are suffocated rather than poisoned which prevents resistant strains from mutating. This process is accomplished within minutes.

Recipe Week: Berryhemp Protein Smoothie

We love this quick and simple smoothie recipe.   Kids also love it since it is a nice deep purple colour and not like a regular “green” smoothie.

Pour the almond milk into a high powered blender first then add the rest of the ingredients and blend until smooth.  Pour into you favourite cup or to go container and enjoy 🙂

Tip: You may have to give it a shake or stir if you let it sit too long since the blueberries will congeal.  You can also add a bit of water if you need to.

Saying Good bye to Steve Meyerowitz ‘The Sproutman’

This is one blog that we have put off writing since Thursday morning. We thought it would be a normal Thursday morning at work, until we got the call letting us know that Steve Meyerowitz, The Sproutman had passed away in the early evening of Wednesday September 9th, from a car accident. The shock and ensuing silence in our offices passed throughout the whole day and rest of the week.

Although many of you knew Steve on some level through a book, course, lecture, or as his friend, for those of you who may not know:  Steve was pronounced “Sproutman®” by Vegetarian Times Magazine in a 1979 feature article that explored the why’s and wherefores of his 100% sprout diet.

Steve was interested in natural foods after a 20 year effort to correct chronic allergies and asthma with conventional medicine. He made dramatic changes in his diet and within two months of eating a strict “living foods,” vegetarian diet, his lifelong symptoms vanished. He continued to practice a 100% raw foods diet (nothing cooked, packaged, canned, frozen, or processed) for five years. During that time, he also experimented with other extreme diets such as fruitarianism (just fruit), juice fasting for as long as 100 days, and briefly, breatharianism (no food, no water).

Steve’s innovative kitchen gardening techniques and the cuisine he developed from them, gave rise to a “School for Sprouts.” He began teaching indoor gardening 12 stories above the streets of New York City. He called his no-cooking school, The Sprout House, since so much of his cuisine included vegetables from his kitchen garden-sprouts.

Steve invented two home sprouters, The Flax Sprout Bag and a tabletop greenhouse called, Sproutman’s Kitchen Garden Salad Grower. He also supplied his growing kits and a full line of organic sprouting seeds via mail order.

Steve sold the mail order business and he and his family moved to breathe fresher air in the Berkshire mountains of Massachusetts. Much of the information from his teaching years have been related in his books. He has the most popular books on sprouts, including Sprouts the Miracle Food, Sproutman’s Kitchen Garden Cookbook, and Wheatgrass Nature’s Finest Medicine, to name a few. But he also has other books on subjects such as fasting and raw juice therapy.

Steve has been featured on Web MD, Renegade Health Show, Hippocrates Health Institute, PBS, QVC, the Home Shopping Network, TV Food Network, and in Prevention, Better Nutrition, and Organic Gardening magazines and countless lectures across North America. In 3 minutes on QVC, 953 people ordered his Cookbook and Kitchen Garden Salad Grower.

We will never forget the day we met Steve. We already knew of him and happily carried his wonderful sprouters and books to the public. Just getting ready to start at a health expo, up walks a man with a twinkle in his eye, and says, “I think we should work together”. Really, how could we resist listening to someone that had sprouts growing out of his hat and spiraling up his tie? And that is exactly how we replied. From that point on, over some raw vegan food and green juice, we discovered we had found a truly kindred spirit, or rather he found us. And so our walk together began.

A year later brought us distributing his products in Canada, and featuring him at all of the big health shows, we always thought he was a rawk star and let him shine his light. We cannot express the joy we experienced at every single event together. Seeing his kindness and care to every individual, and his patience and fortitude in calming stressed out or beginner “sprouters” needing help, showed us his passion for making a difference any way he could. And although many people have a public persona that drastically differs from their personal one, we want to emphasize to everyone – Sproutman really loved speaking to and helping you all – he was truly genuine. Behind the scenes was a man full of love and admiration for others, and so passionate about helping others. He often spoke about his family with so much respect and love, we almost felt that they were with us at events. In fact, he had suggested including one of his sons to join us at the expos. From the way he spoke of his children and their accomplishments, we could easily tell what a good parent he was. A role model for everyone. His focus and determination to be a shining light in our dark times was so strong you could feel it with every idea he sprang at us.

We will never forget our trip to California at a large expo, we just showed up randomly to surprise him. The fun we had getting lost trying to find a raw food restaurant in California driving in endless circles without realizing it, laughing the whole time. Nor will we forget his astounded look when we recited prayers in Hebrew at a fancy dinner.  That evening we toasted our champagne glasses of green juice with smiles in our hearts and memories to treasure.
We are so blessed to have kept company with a man of such integrity that really ‘walked his talk’ and became one of the changes he wanted to see in the world.  We have the utmost respect and gratitude for all of his good works and dedication to healing our planet and all of its inhabitants.

Steve, we will truly miss you and keep walking the path and spreading the light.

10 Easy Surprising Ways To Use Hydrogen Peroxide

Most people think of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as a way to disinfect cuts and scrapes.   Memories of having this solution poured on my cuts still send chills up my spine.  Oh yes, the fizzing of the peroxide when making contact with the wound and the pain associated with it felt like torture as a kid.   Although you won’t find this in first aid kids any more, there are still many uses for this magical liquid throughout the house – from kitchen to laundry to bathroom.

Please note that we highly recommend diluting hydrogen peroxide down to 3% for most uses and even lower if making contact with your skin.  We also recommend food grade hydrogen peroxide when making contact with food or any utensils or items that you will be ingesting.  Food grade peroxide is typically in concentrations of 35% or  3%.   Make sure you read the label in order to dilute it properly and make sure to rinse it off thoroughly if it makes contact with your skin.  We recommend wearing gloves and protective eye wear as a precaution when diluting it.

Scroll through below for 10 Easy Surprising Ways To Use Hydrogen Peroxide:

1. Wash your veggies in 3% diluted hydrogen peroxide.   We typically add an ounce full to the kitchen sink filled with cold water.   The hydrogen peroxide will kill any bacteria and will also help keep your veggies from wilting as fast.  You can even add your wilted veggies to this solution to get them back to life.  Simply let them sit in it for 3-5 minutes.

2. Wash your dish rag or dish sponge with it.  Let it soak for 5 minutes in 3% hydrogen peroxide solution.  It will start to fizz which is a good indicator of how much bacteria is on your sponge or dish rag.   You can also use it on your bottle brush.

3. Use it as a mouth wash.  Dilute the 3% solution by adding half water and half 3% solution so that it is down to 1.5% roughly.  Swish it in your mouth for a minute or two and spit it out.  It will help kill bacteria and whiten your teeth.  Most teeth whiteners on the market use a hydrogen peroxide gel as the whitening agent.

4. Clean your toothbrush with it.  First off, keeping your toothbrush exposed in the bathroom near the toilet is not the best idea in terms of hygiene.  We keep a small spray bottle of 3% peroxide and spray our toothbrushes to kill any bacteria.

5.  Clean your toilette and counter tops with it.  Put some in a spray bottle and spray down your counter tops and toilets with it.  Let it sit for a couple of minutes to really disinfect.   You may choose to dilute it down to 1.5% to make it last and so that it does not fade any painted surfaces or cheap laminates.  We prefer to purchase the 3.7 liter 35% food-grade solution for cleaning since you can dilute it and it is the best bang for your buck.

6. Use it to whiten your clothes.  Instead of using bleach add an ounce to your whites to help brighten them and get rid of odours.

7. Use it as a deodorant. You can actually purchase ozonated gels (gels that are infused with hydrogen peroxide) that can be used as a natural deodorant.  Or you can spray 3% peroxide on your armpits to kill any odour causing bacteria.  You can add a bit of lavender essential if you like as a fragrance.  Lavender is also anti-bacterial.

8. Sanitize your fridge by spraying it on the shelves and inside the drawers, on handles and let it sit for 3-5 minutes and wipe off with a wet sponge.  The more fizz you see the more bacteria you have in your fridge.

9.  Use it to clean nuts and seeds.  Many people don’t realize that nuts and seeds are not actually cleaned with any water or solution when you purchase them.  Sure they are in a shell and the shell is cracked open and the nut or seed goes through a production process before it is bagged.   In order to make sure that there is no bacteria or contaminants we like to soak our nuts and seeds in a 1.5 – 3%  hydrogen peroxide solution for a few minutes before eating them.

10. Cleaning grout, tiles and mold are a few other uses for this wonderful product.  Spray directly on the problem area and let sit.   We also like making a paste with baking soda and full on 35% hydrogen peroxide solution for those tough spots.

Hopefully we inspired you into getting rid of some of the harmful chemicals and cleaning sprays that you typically find at your local grocery store and purchasing some hydrogen peroxide as a healthier alternative.

We would like to hear from you.  What do you use hydrogen peroxide for?

6 Amazing Ways to Use Apple Cider Vinegar

Most of us have heard of the term superfood, but what about superfluid? Okay, we haven’t heard of that either, but we have heard of all the amazing reasons to use Apple Cider Vinegar.  We’re also heard that even those who don’t usually turn to natural remedies are noticing the incredible benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar, too. So what else you can use Apple Cider Vinegar for besides healthy hair? We think a list of what you CAN’T use it for is probably shorter, but read on to find out about six awesome things you can do with Apple Cider Vinegar, and why the next big superfood might not even be a food at all.

  1. All-Purpose Cleaner

Apple Cider Vinegar is a power tool when used as an all-purpose cleaner! This non-toxic solution is a natural disinfectant. It can be used for almost any kind of cleaning, from wiping down walls to wiping out unpleasant refrigerator smells. Lots of Apple Cider Vinegar fans already swear by using it as their laundry detergent, too.Hsnd with apple

  2. Deodorant

Okay, we know what you’re thinking. Is the alternative to smelling like body odor going to make me smell like salad dressing? Believe it or not, the answer is no. Apple Cider Vinegar absorbs body odor without synthetic fragrance. It’s scent disappears as it dries. If you’ve run out of your usual deodorant, apply some Apple Cider Vinegar on your underarms for all day freshness.

  3. Sore Throat Remedy

We’ve heard some people use whiskey, but we wouldn’t recommend it ourselves. The answer is actually in your cupboard. Apple Cider Vinegar’s antibacterial properties help fight infection and boost the body’s immune system. Adding a few teaspoons of Apple Cider Vinegar to 8 oz. of warm water can put you just a few sips away from sore throat relief.

  4. Beauty and Skincare

Who says looking good should be complicated? Apple Cider Vinegar could be your skin’s drink of choice! Apple Cider Vinegar is a natural astringent. It fights acne and breakouts by removing dirt, oil and makeup. It also dissolves dead skin cells and is known to be a chemical-free wart remover.

Apple Cider Vinegar works as a skin-care essential with its ability to fade bruises, too. Just like Aloe Vera, ACV is also a sunburn soother. Apple Cider Vinegar is a great natural teeth whitener, too! After you’re done putting it on basically every inch of your skin, why not try applying some to your teeth?Close up of the face of a young lady with red apple

  5. Energy-Booster

A non-caffeinated energy boost? It might sound crazy, but over half of adults drink coffee. This same percentage of people also say they don’t get enough sleep. If you’re looking for a better alternative, you’ve found it! Apple Cider Vinegar doesn’t just boost immunity, it also has the ability to aid in digestion and pump up the body’s metabolism. Those who incorporate drinking ACV into their day know it’s a great natural energy booster.

  6. Detox Aid

Apple Cider Vinegar is rich in vitamins, enzymes and minerals. That makes it great for detoxing. ACV works to restore pH levels and remove toxic waste. That’s another reason why it’s one of our favorite clarifiers for hair. You can use Apple Cider Vinegar to help detox your body by ingesting it, but make sure to dilute it first. Remember to always use the organic, unfiltered and unpasteurized kind like Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar, too.  Try making a detox drink by mixing it with hot lemon water or green tea.
