Lets take a look at super fruit that has some great benefits for your body but are not as well know as the berries that we previously discussed. This information can be very helpful when it comes to getting a better look at your body.  Including different berries in your diet will allow you to have a more varied and rounded diet, which is better for your overall health.  If you rotate between different types of berries it allows your body to gain a wider variety of nutrients that it normally may not be receiving.

Juniper Berries

These berries tend be found in Europe.  While these berries have been used for many different things including as a contraceptive for females or to increase energy levels, historically their main use was with the treatment of diseases.  Juniper berries have an antiseptic effect and are currently used in the treatment of urinary tract infections.  They are also used to treat joint pain, rheumatoid arthritis and nerve/ muscle disorders.  However, this berry should be consumed in moderation as it can be very toxic if consumed in excess.  Juniper berries also tend to be used as a spice for flavouring dishes, with some people reporting that they have a similar taste to pepper.  These berries can be used in cooking, teas, smoothies or other drinks.



Barberries are native to Persia, and have been used for many years to help with digestion and to help reduce gastrointestinal pain.  Today barberries are still used for these purposes but have also been found to be great for the liver.  These berries also contain high levels of Vitamin C.  Barberries have a very unique and complex taste as they tend to be slightly sweet and tangy yet tart.  These berries are excellent in trail mixes, smoothies, teas or added to recipes where a slightly tart taste is desired.


Aronia Berry Powder

These native European berries have historically been used to treat urinary tract infections and inflammation.  This berry is very high in antioxidants with ORAC scores in excess of 7300 mm per gram, one of the highest values of all red and black berries.  Aronia berries tend to have a very tart flavour.  This berry powder is a great additive to smoothies, teas, salad dressings, and other recipes.
