Juniper Berries

These berries tend be found in Europe.  While these berries have been used for many different things including as a contraceptive for females or to increase energy levels, historically their main use was with the treatment of diseases.  Juniper berries have an antiseptic effect and are currently used in the treatment of urinary tract infections.  They are also used to treat joint pain, rheumatoid arthritis and nerve/ muscle disorders.  However, this berry should be consumed in moderation as it can be very toxic if consumed in excess.  Juniper berries also tend to be used as a spice for flavouring dishes, with some people reporting that they have a similar taste to pepper.  These berries can be used in cooking, teas, smoothies or other drinks.

Barberries are native to Persia, and have been used for many years to help with digestion and to help reduce gastrointestinal pain.  Today barberries are still used for these purposes but have also been found to be great for the liver.  These berries also contain high levels of Vitamin C.  Barberries have a very unique and complex taste as they tend to be slightly sweet and tangy yet tart.  These berries are excellent in trail mixes, smoothies, teas or added to recipes where a slightly tart taste is desired.

Aronia Berry Powder

These native European berries have historically been used to treat urinary tract infections and inflammation.  This berry is very high in antioxidants with ORAC scores in excess of 7300 mm per gram, one of the highest values of all red and black berries.  Aronia berries tend to have a very tart flavour.  This berry powder is a great additive to smoothies, teas, salad dressings, and other recipes.

Beyond Berries – Part 1

Are you looking to add a new flavour to your diet? You might want try some of these super fruits.  These berries are not only great in flavour they also contain essential nutrients that are beneficial for your body.

Incan Berries (Golden Berries)

This unique exotic super fruit is grown in South America.  It was traditionally used to help in the treatment of disease, to reduce inflammation and to increase energy levels.  This berry was original consumed as a fresh fruit or one that had been sundried.  Incan berries are an excellent source of fiber, as they contain more fiber per 100 grams than any other fruit available.  This fruit also contains high amounts of vitamin P (bioflavonoids).  Today, these berries are being used to help decrease inflammation, to increase energy levels, and to increase your fiber intake.  Incan berries have a sweet/sour yet tangy taste, making them a great addition to many bake goods and snack foods.  Inca berries are great in fruit cakes, breads, trail mixes or even straight out of the package.  These berries tend to look like a big golden raisin but they are a bit darker in colour.

incan-berriesGoji Berries

This Chinese berry is now a North American sensation.  Goji berries were traditionally used in Chinese medicine to help with kidney and liver functions, lower back pain, and dizziness. The other main use of Goji berries in the past was to promote longevity and youth.  Goji berries today are used to help longevity, inflammation and to help the immune system operate more effectively, as they contain high levels of antioxidants.  Goji berries contain all 18 essential amino acids, and they have the highest amount of protein that can be found in any fruit.  Goji berries have  minerals and vitamins that are essential for your body, such as iron, zinc, vitamin C and many other trace minerals.  Goji berries have a slightly sweet, reminding one of a cross between dried cranberry and raisin, but more subtle in flavour. Goji berries are excellent in trail mixes, added to meals, and in smoothies or snacks.  The suggested serving size is 28 grams per day.  Eating a lot of Goji berries in one day can be toxic to your body and can increase your blood sugar levels to unsafe levels, so keep them in check.  Most Goji berries are very hard when you get them dried, as they have been dried in the sun and cured there to preserve the nutrients.  The Heaven Mountain Goji berries are very moist and tend to have more moisture than other dried Goji berries due to special processing/packaging.

Maqui Berries

This super fruit has been traditionally used to help reduce inflammation, and to help to support a healthy heart.  These berries tend to be grown in Chile.  Today, these berries are used to help increase energy levels, stamina and increase ones strength.  These berries have high levels of antioxidants.  The flavour of Maqui berries tends to be slightly tart or a bit on the bitter side, which can be great when added to a smoothie.  These berries can be mixed in smoothies, trail mixes or just eaten right out of the package. They have a very strong dark pigment that will even overcolour spirulina or chlorella in a smoothie (it will change from a green colour to purple because of the strong pigment).

Coconut to a new level

Tired of the same flavours? Are you wanting to experiment with different products?  Have you tried the different coconut products that we have?  Coconut Secrets offers a variety of products that will increase the flavour intensity of everyday meals.

These products are made from the sap that a coconut tree produces, much like how a maple tree is tapped to produce maple syrup.  Unlike the process that is used to create maple syrup, the sap from the coconut trees is not boiled at high temperatures, this allows them to stay in a raw form.    The sap is naturally sweet and very rich in nutrients, is low glycemic, contains 17 different amino acids, has a wide range of vitamin B’s, and other minerals.   Unlike other coconut nectars and aminos on the market, all of the Coconut Secrets products are 100% raw, 100% organic, gluten-free, soy-free, dairy-free, and GMO-free.

Coconut Nectar

Looking for something different to put on your pancakes or as a sweetener in teas? Then you might want to try Coconut Nectar.  This product can be a replacement in any recipe that calls for a liquid sweetener.  Coconut Secrets Coconut Nectar has many different uses; it can be used as syrup or sweetener, in things like smoothies, teas, a topping on your favourite cereal or an additive to that family favourite dessert recipe. The Nectar has the consistency of molasses, but has a lighter sweeter taste.  It may remind you of products that have a maple or caramel flavours, yet in its own way it is lighter and has more complex flavouring

Coconut Aminos

Wanting to try something different when cooking dinner?  This sweet and salty “soy sauce” like product is amazing to add to meals.  It is excellent in sautes, as a marinade for your favourite teriyaki dish.  Use it anywhere you would use tamari or soy sauce.   When cooking with it though be careful until you are familiar with the product as it has a low boiling point.  This product has a natural fermentation process which helps aids with digestion and tastes close to soy sauce but it not as salty.   The product is made by fermenting the coconut nectar and adding some salt and water to it.   Simple and tasty.

Coconut Vinegar

Tired of using Apple Cider Vinegar?  It might be time to try coconut vinegar, as it has the same alkalizing effect to the body. This naturally fermented product is great in dressings, marinades, sauces and can also help produce HCL (hydrochloric acid) to aid in digestion.  This product is not as harsh in taste as apple cider vinegar, it is light and has a faint sweetness taste to it.

Coconut Crystals

Wanting to add a new element of flavour to your baking?  Coconut Crystals, which is just another name for coconut sugar, is a great substitute to regular sugar products.  It is produced at a very low temperature to allow the moisture to evaporate and the sugars to crystallize.  This is one of the only coconut sugars on the market that is truly raw and not boiled.  This product can be used in any recipe that calls for sugar, over cereal, in teas, or even just as a snack as it can be very addictive 🙂  (although we don’t recommend eating sweeteners out of tin).  Coconut crystals may remind you of maple sugar.

Coconut Flour

This raw coconut flour comes from the actual coconut and has very low carbohydrates, and is low in calories and fats.  Coconut flour contains 40% dietary fiber and can help balance your blood sugar level.  It is great to use when thickening gravy, as a supplement in smoothies, and when baking.  Be careful when baking though, as it absorbs a lot of moisture your recipes will have to be adjusted to allow for this factor.  This gluten free flour is a great option for people who have gluten allergies or those just looking for a gluten free flour.

What have you made with these products? Any great recipes out there that are a must try?  We would love to hear about them.
