Superfoods for a Super Summer Part 4: Crazy for Coconuts!!

As we wrap up our 4 part chit chat about superfoods and just how super they make us feel, with summer here its only fitting that week 4 be all about the super hydrating electrolyte packing Coconut!!
Most people know what a mature coconut looks like, a brown husky shell with a sweet and thick meaty inside.  Of course us health nuts tend to prefer the young coconuts, the greenish yellow smooth shelled coconuts with a softer thinner meat.
Young coconuts are a superior food, in actual fact they can even be life saving.  The clear coconut water is one of the highest sources of electrolytes found in nature.  Making it perfect for the hot summer months, but also great for athletes and even wonderful for mothers during child birth.
Young coconut water is closely identical to human blood plasma, making it a universal donor.  Brilliant isn’t it!!
Back in World War 2 wounded soldiers were given coconut water for emergency plasma transfusions.
Young coconut meat is more beneficial that in its mature state. Some of these amazing qualities include:
Improvement of the nervous system, rejuvenating oxidative tissue damage , increasing breast-milk production, digestive aid and we will fill you in on a few more.
The oil, the cream and the young flesh are all such super healers!  They are all valuable to the immune system as they contain antiviral, antifungal and antimicrobial fatty acids.  This helps fight off bacteria, fungal overgrowths and viruses.
They all help improve the bodies absorption of calcium and magnesium.
Powerful antioxidants help improve the skin.
They help regulate and support hormone production, help the body use the essential fatty acids more efficiently and also help increase metabolism due to the presence of the medium chain saturated fatty acids.  Coconuts and their oil have been given such a bad rap because of its high calorie and fat content when in actual fact it has been proven to help with weight loss ( farm animals fed coconut products are never obese!!)
Young coconut water is especially beneficial for infants too, great for hydration and excellent in improving muscle size and general physical growth .
Coconut oil can also be fabulous as a skin moisturizer, and can soothe and even prevent skin eruptions and rashes.  Try rubbing over sun burnt skin ( hopefully that won’t happen to you this summer, but just incase!), the oil will soothe as well as heal the irritated skin and quite possibly stop it from pre mature aging as well, worth a shot eh!
So how can people possibly speak negatively about our amazing coconuts after seeing the crazy long list of nutritional benefits, its just nuts isn’t it!! Coconuts are awesome!
If you are looking to use your smoothie as more of a meal and would like it to keep you full longer, simply add a tablespoon of coconut oil and it just may do the trick.  The recipes and options for using coconuts in their various forms are endless really, super versatile indeed.
Anything from adding dried coconut pieces to your trail mix, sprinkled over fresh fruit with a hint of lime juice, it can be made into coconut milk, great in raw desserts , eaten on its own and oh so much more.
How about a yummy blueberry coconut ice cream in this hot summer heat?  Give it a go:
Take 2 cups of raw cashews
3 cups of coconut water or spring water
The flesh of one young coconut
1/2 cup of coconut oil
1 cup of agave nectar
1/2 teaspoon of vanilla powder
1 cup of frozen blueberries ( fresh is fine too)
pinch of salt
First blend the cashew and strain through a nut milk bad and blend all other ingredients and mix together.  Freeze for about 4 hours and serve with a sprinkle of shredded raw coconut.
Well now that our Superfoods series is complete we’d love to know from you how superfoods are helping to make you feel super?  Do they give you more energy, help you sleep better, provide much needed vegan protein?  Comment below and let us know! 🙂

Superfoods for a Super Summer: Part 3- The Goji Berry!!

Over the past few weeks we have chatted about the amazing benefits of 2 of our favourite superfoods.  The powerful protein packed Hempseed and the awesomely energizing Maca root!!
Now lets chat about our favourite berry, the Goji Berry!!  These superfoods have actually been successfully grown in Canada too! ( both Nova Scotia and B.C)
The Goji berry has been named “the fountain of youth” and the chinese hold a strong belief that these berries can significantly extend life.  One legend talks of a man said to have lived to the age of 252 years old and consuming goji berries daily, interesting little fact!
The Goji Berry is an adaptogen ( balances and stabilizes the body naturally) and so it is responsible for so many therapeutic actions.
They boost the immune system, protect the liver, improve blood quality, are packed with anti-aging compounds being one of the best sources of anti-oxidants out there.
Seen as perhaps the most nutritionally rich berry/fruit on our planet our list of benefits is huge!!
Here goes:
-Complete protein source
-Contains 20 plus trace minerals
-High in B vitamins
-Anti-inflammatory agents
-2-4 times the amount of anti-oxidants than blueberries
-Goji berries are known to stimulate the body to make more human growth hormones ( anti-aging, anti-aging, anti-aging!!!)
-Enhanced stamina
-Sexual energy
-Beneficial for the kidneys and adrenals
As usual there are just too many stellar qualities to list, okay okay why not a few more, well Goji Berries also contain a large amount of hydrogen and are quite hydrating ( great as a snack in the hot weather).
They also contain choline which combats free-radical damage and can boost brain function too.
Goji berries taste simply delicious so they are perfect when consumed on their own, but they can be added to so many great things and are available not only in their true berry form but also in powders and juices as well.  We add them to smoothies, teas ( helpful for digestive issues), perfect added to trail mixes and on top of salads too.
With the hot weather upon us we thought we’d share a nice refreshing Goji Berry recipe, a thirst quenching electrolyte beverage!
-Soak 1 cup of Goji Berries in about 6 cups or so of young coconut water for approx 4 hours.
Strain the berries out ( use in a smoothie or raw pudding) but keep the soak water as the base for your drink.
-Add the juice of one lemon and one lime
-Add 1 tbsp of agave nectar
-1 pinch of himalayan salt
-1 handful of fresh organic mint leaves
Sit back relax and enjoy!!
Please let us know what your favourite ways are to enjoy these wonderful berries, do you eat them everyday?Image

Superfoods for a Super Summer: Part 2

ImageGood Day!! For week 2 of our Superfoods special another one of our chart toppers without a doubt is the energy packing Maca!

Maca is a root grown in South America that has been benefiting many for hundreds of years and of course in more recent years has been widely used and recognized in North America for its nutritious potential.  It is actually a member of the cruciferous family, just like broccoli, cabbage, kale etc.
Maca has been used for centuries medicinally in South America to enhance fertility.  Thankfully this amazing root is now finally available to all of us worldwide 🙂
So why exactly do we love it so much, well here is a long list of great reasons!!
-Maca provides powerful strength and stamina
-It is libido enhancing
-It is an adaptogen ( stabilizes our hormonal, nervous etc systems naturally)
-Maca supports the thyroid and endocrine sysytem
-It is known to improve ones mood
-Helps with fatigue and poor memory
-Aids with anemia
Maca is also rich in calcium, magnesium, iron and so many more vitamins and minerals.
Maca has also been shown to increase blood oxygen content with in turn helps us to deal with all types of stress.  It can also help with altitude sickness, pretty neat!
So many people for various reasons have fertility issues and often turn to medical interventions as their first avenues to reach there goals in this area, however there is great research and results showing the value behind consuming Maca root and enhanced fertility as well as possibly improving sterility also.  Given that Maca is a natural source it just makes sense to give it a try first don’t you think?
Maca is awesome when added with cacao as a great non stimulating energy boost.  It has sort of a nutty flavour and is perfect in smoothies, even nice when mixed with matcha green tea or blended up with some raw nut milks.  Just about any natural beverage you can think of!!
Try this simple yet powerful raw Maca Cacao milk:
  • 1 cup raw almonds ( soaked and rinsed)
  • 3 cups water
  • 1 Tablespoon maca powder
  • 1 Tablespoon cacao powder
  • 2 medjool dates or 2 Tablespoons of either agave or yacon syrup
Blend together, strain with nut milk bag and enjoy!!  Super for children too as an alternative to “regular” chocolate milk.
Hope you are enjoying a super summer so far and maybe adding a few new Superfoods to your list!Image

Superfoods for a Super Summer!!

The word superfood has been coming up a lot lately and we get a lot of people asking about Superfoods. That being said we thought why not talk about a few of our favourites and why we love them so much. Over the next 4 weeks we will discuss some of these amazing powerhouses in the hopes that if you are not already enjoying these that you will soon be convinced and jump on board and have a Superfood Summer!!

Superfoods are considered foods that have at least a dozen unique properties which are highly beneficial to ones health and wellness.
Eating Superfoods is a great way to guarantee that your body will be supplied with all the nutrition it requires in order to be healthy and carry you on throughout the years 🙂
These foods are all natural, and work together in the human body to provide synergy and balance. They truly are an essential part of our balanced diets. They allow us to eat less while getting more nutrition, pretty neat!!

Superfoods are best when consumed in their Raw and Organic forms. Of course we know that over the years it has been demonstrated that this is the best way to preserve the foods vitamins, minerals, enzymes, protein etc.

So if you are looking to feel better, have more energy, ease pain, sleep better, etc then please join us on our journey through Superfoods and see if these can help you too!

This week we will talk about Hemp.
If any of you raw vegans out there are like us then we are sure you too have been asked a million times ” how can you possibly get your protein on this kind of diet?”

Well we mentioned Spirulina in last weeks blog ( which happens to be the very best source of protein) but it doesn’t stop there.
Hempseeds are awesome!` Little tidbit of info here, they belong to a plant family that can actually survive in nearly every climate on earth ( how cool is that)
Though Hemp and marijuana are both classified as Cannabis Sativa, hemp is of the variety that is completely legal, containing as little as .05 to 1 % of THC.

So why is the Hempseed so “Super”
-Approx 35% protein ( all digestible)
-Great source of Omega 3 and Omega 6, with an ideal balance
-Great source of Lecithin ( brain building and liver supporting)
-Contains Chlorophyll
-Easy on the digestive system
-Immune boosting
-Full of essential Fatty Acids
-Powerful antioxidants
-Anti inflammatory

Hempseeds also contain calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc and so many more important minerals that are readily absorbed and utilized by the body. Of course not to forget that hemp oil is also used and is quite booming these days in the personal hygiene industry. Everything from shampoos, soaps, lip balms and more.
The Hemp plant happens to be made up of some of the worlds strongest natural fibres, thus finding it widely used in clothing and fabric, and resulting in a fabric that is stronger more absorbent than cotton. Oh and hemp clothing can also provide protection from the sun’s UV rays. So many great reasons that clothing made up of all or a good amount of hemp is gaining lots of popularity.

Well as usual our list can go on and on, but hoping that we have touched on some main strong points and maybe even convinced some of you to consume or use this amazing Superfood more often 🙂

Care for a recipe, how about a nice tasty salad dressing

Super Hempseed Dressing:
1/3 cup of hempseed
1/4 cup hempseed oil
1/4 cup coconut oil ( place in a double boiler or in your dehydrator to soften up)

A handful of parsley and or other fresh herbs ( oregano is nice too!)
2 tbsp of Spirulina ( we so love this too)
2 tbsp of agave
A pinch of salt ( celtic, himalayan )
Simply blend everything up and pour over your salad. Or rub through kale leaves ( de stemmed and torn up), place in dehydrator and enjoy yummy Hempseed kale chips!!
