With foodie buzz around chefs these days’ people have become enamored with being a top chef, plating, presentation, and taste. More people are turning to their own kitchens to re-create dishes seen on television/magazines etc. Add in the element of different eating diets and you have a very interesting methodology of achieving the same results with different techniques.

Such as the case with the raw food movement, more people are making their own fruit leathers, pressing seeds for raw ‘burgers’, or pizza shells. The awareness of food and the relationship with food has become different. People want to know where their food comes from and the definition of food has changed greatly in the past 20 years. What is food to one person is a pet to another.

As more and more people realize the need to conserve and reuse every day items DIY (Do it Yourself) crafts have become quite a fashion statement. Making items from scratch has become not only popular, but also practical. Yes, the days of the milkman coming around are gone, but that doesn’t mean the spirit of personalization is. There are still crafters burning away the midnight oil creating beauty out of every day items; from “milk” container birdhouses to spare tires turned to purses. If it can be re-used there is someone out there doing so.

Thankfully, we also are privy to live in a time where raw foods are sold in stores and easily available. Who could have foreseen raw, vegan and allergen friendly foods so readily and easily attainable in neighbourhood grocery stores? Want vegan gluten free, soy free, corn free food – it does exist. Today’s age is in a state of flux, a balance of traditionalist and modernists who enjoy the lifestyle how they want when they want.

Where do you find yourself, has your relationship with food changed, are you creating every day art?
